In August 2019, I was involved as a ballet educator in the humanitarian project “Ballet in the slums” in Kibera (Kenya), the biggest slum in Africa. The resilience program developed by Catherine Habasque who founded Dancers for the World in 2015, was created to support the children of the Project Elimu by Mike Wamaya, educate them through ballet to discipline, empathy, rhythm and self-esteem, and develop their talent. During our three weeks stay, we trained approximately 200 children every day and choreographed a piece with 30 of them on the famous Bolero’s music by Ravel. “Finding the future”, as the children named it themselves, was performed to raise funds for the center.
The life-changing and emotional experience has certainly been one of the adventures that I cherish the most!
